ABOUT US

Context

Data from the 2000 census reveals that Boston’s immigrant population is growing at a phenomenal rate. Because of a huge influx of immigrants over the past decade, people of color now constitute a majority (50.5%) of Boston’s population

History of CSIO

CSIO was founded in 1999 in response to an assessment of the barriers to organizing for social and economic justice in immigrant communities in the greater Boston area. This assessment, which took the form of interviews and focus groups with over 100 immigrant organizers, leaders and directors of immigrant organizations, pointed to a tremendous need for training, organizational support, peer networking and other capacity building supports in immigrant communities. CSIO’s programs emerged out of this dialogue.

CSIO Mission and Approach

The mission of the Center to Support Immigrant Organizing (CSIO) is to support and help develop the work of individuals, groups, organizations and communities dedicated to organizing immigrants around the issues that affect their lives.

Organizational Infrastructure

CSIO is a small intermediary organization, currently led by a team of three staff and one consultant and five Advisory Board members. We use Third Sector New England (TSNE) as our fiscal sponsor.
